THE LIGHT SPECTRUM — WHAT EACH PART DOES FOR YOU (TIER 2 · MEMBERS · REFERENCE)
Sunlight isn't one thing. It's everything — every wavelength, from ultraviolet through visible to infrared. One out of eighty octaves of the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Your body is built to receive all of it. Here's what each part does.
The sun delivers the complete spectrum every day. Indoor life delivers a fraction — and only the part that damages without the parts that protect and repair.
What it is: The high-energy, invisible end of the spectrum. You can't see it, but the body reads it through the eyes and skin.
What blocks it: Window glass blocks UV completely. A sunny office is dark for your biology. Sunglasses block it from the eyes. Sunscreen blocks it from the skin.
The key insight: UV from the sun comes balanced with red and infrared — the wavelengths that protect and repair. Isolated UV (like a tanning bed) has none of that balance. The sun is safe because it delivers UV inside the full spectrum. Remove the balance and the risk changes.
What it is: The short-wavelength, high-energy end of visible light. The most powerful timing signal the body receives.
The critical difference: Blue light from the sun arrives balanced with every other wavelength — red, infrared, UV, green. The body can handle it because the protective wavelengths ride alongside it. Blue light from LEDs and screens arrives isolated — no red, no infrared, no balance. The body has no defence against isolated blue because it never existed in nature.
Why this matters: The same colour of light — blue — is beneficial from the sun and damaging from a screen. The difference isn't the colour. It's what's missing around it.
What it is: The middle of the visible spectrum. The colour you see when you look at grass, trees, and plants.
The key insight: Green spaces aren't just visually peaceful. They're changing the spectrum around you — bouncing red wavelengths at every cell in your body. The greener the environment, the more you're bathed in red light without knowing it.
What it is: The long-wavelength end of visible light. The colour of sunset, fire, and the glow of embers.
What it is: Just beyond what the eye can see. The wavelength range that penetrates deepest into the body — through skin, through muscle, into organs, into cells.
The key insight: Near-infrared is the largest portion of sunlight — and the one indoor life removes completely. Walls, windows, and LEDs deliver zero infrared. This is the biggest gap between indoor life and outdoor life.
What it is: The wavelength range you feel as warmth radiating from a fire, a sauna, a hot bath, another person, or the sun on your skin.
The sun: UV + blue + green + red + near-infrared + far infrared. Everything, balanced, together. About 100,000 lux on a clear day.
Indoor LEDs and screens: Isolated blue. No UV. No red. No infrared. About 300 lux. That's 0.3% of the intensity and a fraction of the spectrum.
A red light panel: A narrow slice of red and near-infrared. Useful as a supplement. Not a replacement.
A fire: Broadband red and infrared. The natural nighttime source. What humans sat around every evening for thousands of years.
A traditional sauna: Intense broadband infrared. The deepest heat-recovery tool still available.
A hot bath: Gentle infrared through warm water. Universal access. No equipment needed.
The hierarchy is always the same: the sun first. Everything else supports.
